It’s the ideal platform for new substations, facilitating the integration of cyber security and new technologies including IEC 61850. However, it`s equally suited to substation retrofits where there’s already a wide variety of installed equipment requiring integration and migration to the latest technologies.
Each 19” rack supports a processor and up to fifteen plug and play I/O modules. I/O modules range in functionality, point counts, and interface/termination options. Multiple processors can be installed to provide redundancy, data segregation and additional communication ports. Critical software applications can run on multiple processors for redundancy. Multiple processors can be combined to form a data concentrator and multiple racks can be networked to form large systems. Its scalability allows it to be used in large HV substations with tens of thousands of I/O points and small MV substations with a few hundred points. These can be hardwired, derived or IED data points
Each processor module supports two Ethernet ports and five serial ports (RS232/ RS485/ RS422), along with a display for status and diagnostic information. The I/O module range includes 64 channel digital inputs, 32 channel digital outputs and 32 channel DC analogue inputs.
IEC 61850 Gateway
XCell can operate as a substation gateway, interfacing between the substation IEDs and the SCADA Control Centre. XCell supports a variety of IED protocols including IEC61850, IEC103, DNP3 and Modbus. XCell also supports a rich suite of SCADA protocols including DNP3 (serial and TCP/IP), IEC101/104 and an extensive range of proprietary protocols. It also supports multiple SCADA links, generally preferred for increased system availability.
To provide flexible site-specific solutions, XCell supports the IEC 61131 graphical programming standard, allowing simple graphical application development using:

The unit has an in-built cryptographic engine to support encryption for cyber security. It is designed for secure remote access to realtime status/measurements, system diagnostics, system configuration and firmware upgrades. Security features include centralised user authentication, SSL/TLS link encryption, encrypted passwords, SSH access, SNMP V3 diagnostics and security alerts, system logs as well as SCADA link secure authentication.
